Partners - Syme-Woolner Neighbourhood and Family Center

Syme-Woolner Neighbourhood and Family Centre (SWNFC) is an amalgamated charitable organization that was originally founded as two grass-roots centres in the 70's and 80's when tenants in community housing buildings began to self-organize. Their core communities are the Beechborough-Greenbrook and Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood (known as "Jane-Woolner"). Today the organization operates multiple program locations and centres, increasingly serving all of the former city of York from their administrative and adult services base on Eglinton Ave West.

WKNC started as an outreach program of the Central United Church in Weston with Tuesday night suppers for the service users in the area. As the need became apparent and people came to the service, Syme-Woolner began to send their staff to offer more services during the period of the outreach program. As this additional service provision became more and more successful, it was advanced to become an entity in its own right and WKNC was born with SCPI funding. SWNFC and WKNC have also partnered on a number of funding proposals in an effort to support coordination of services in York.
